How Ultrasonic Cleaning Works

Ultrasonic cleaning technology reaches the most inaccessible surface areas of complex aerospace components used in manufacturing, overhaul, servicing and in maintenance stages. Ultrasonic cleaning operates on the principle of agitating cleaning solvents using high frequency sound waves.

The agitation creates millions of microscopic bubbles that implode releasing vast quantities of energy. This action, known as cavitation, dislodges any contaminant stuck to the surface of a part and beyond. Including internal areas which are not accessible by other cleaning methods using sprays and mechanical agitation.

Essentially cavitation provides the physical "push" required to break the mechanical and ionic bonds that come into contact with the cleaning fluid.

Ultrasonic cleaning delivers a much faster and better quality cleaning result. Most ultrasonic cleaning takes 5 to 6 minutes.  It’s a far more environmentally friendly alternative to solvent cleaning.

Ultrasonic technology provides powerful, highly effective cleaning solutions for the marine industry including manufacturing and repairs to engines, parts and components. Sunflower provides highly effective ultrasonic cleaning solutions to remove salt deposits, silts and debris as well as oils, grease and other harmful contaminants from marine systems to extend the life and condition of your equipment.

Trusted Marine cleaning equipment

Ultrasonic systems can also be used on-board to effectively clean both sturdy and fragile engine parts with ease. No more hand scrubbing marine engine components with harmful chemicals that are toxic both to you and to the environment—ultrasonic cleaning provides thorough, powerful, deep cleansing to break down salt, grease and oil but gentle enough to be used on small engine components.

Most ultrasonic cleaning is done with everyday tap water. Additional heat and detergents can be added. Total time required for most cleaning is between 5 to 6 minutes.

Ultrasonic cleaning is ideal for the following marine engine components:

  • Pistons

  • Valve spindles

  • Cylinder heads

  • Engine blocks

  • Heat exchangers

  • Fuel filters

  • Fuel injectors

  • Wheel hubs

What do I need to consider when purchasing a large ultrasonic cleaner?

When dealing with large liquid volumes and ultrasonic cleaners, there are several considerations:

  • Tank Integrity: The tank needs to be able to withstand the pressure of the liquids and the weight of the parts being cleaned. This requires a specific tank design that moves the stress points away from welded edges.

  • Ultrasonic Power: There needs to be enough ultrasonic power to provide the cleaning performance you need.

  • Ultrasonic Frequency: The frequency chosen will usually be in the low frequency range when cleaning heavy parts, or Multiple Frequency Ultrasonic System operating at 25 and 40 kHz.

  • Heating Systems: Large tanks may require extended time to heat to operational temperatures due to the large liquid volume in the tank.

  • Filtration Systems: Need to be large enough to remove the dirt being removed from the parts, and to push it towards the filter system suction port. Filter housings and pumps may need to be larger.

  • High-volume Oil Skimming: When removing greases and oils, a high volume oil skimmer may be needed to prevent oils from re-depositing onto parts when they are removed.

The Sunflower group and partners have manufactured tanks from 1000-3500 gallons in size. That’s large enough to accommodate a small car. If you already have an existing tank and require additional submerged transducer systems, please contact us.
